Founded by the mythical hero Diomedes, Canosa was one of the most important cities of ancient Apulia and enjoyed a golden age in Roman times. An important stop on the Via Traiana, the Roman road built under Emperor Trajan and linking Brindisi to Rome, Canosa was the administrative capital of the region during the Roman Empire. Later, it was the stronghold of the Grimaldi family from 1530 to 1643. The town has kept some interesting architectural traces of these glorious times. In the centre and along the ancient Via Traiana, there are ancient remains. On the hill of Santi Quaranta Martiri, some remains of the Lombard castle remain.
