On the right bank of the Ofanto, on the border of the provinces of Bari and Foggia, it is a somewhat isolated and certainly underestimated town. Canne was, in fact, the scene of many violent events due to its strategic location. Lombards, Saracens, Byzantines and Normans fought here between 1018 and 1041. The most famous battle was the one between Hannibal's troops and the Roman legions (216 BC), who were surrounded and then routed by the Carthaginian general. Traces of this battle can be found on the Antiquarium site, but it offers much more. It is in fact an archaeological treasure trove with prehistoric, ancient and medieval remains.
