Ancient port of the Roman city of Canosa at the mouth of the Ofanto, Barletta acquired importance in the medieval period. Unlike the neighboring cities, for which the advent of the Angevin dynasty marked the beginning of difficulties, Barletta, whose powerful fleet traded with the East, experienced a golden age in this period. In the sixteenth century, the city was the scene of fighting between the French and Spanish for the conquest of the kingdom of Naples, a historical episode known as the "Challenge of Barletta. Today the city is an agricultural center and a seaside resort with beautiful beaches. Its historical center is full of Romanesque, Renaissance and Baroque buildings.
