Bucaramanga, the Ciudad Bonita, located on a plateau bordered by the Surata and Oro rivers, is the capital of the department of Southern Santander. It has a population of about 1.2 million people, including its agglomeration. Famous for its gardens, it is nicknamed the "City of Parks". Bucaramanga is also known for the quality of its tobacco, pure and of excellent quality, and for its famous jewelry industry, as well as for its delicious mangoes! It is one of the most dynamic cities in Colombia, with many students and one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country. It is becoming a major metropolis.Louis Michel de Lacroix (1780-1834), who was both a general under Napoleon and Simón Bolívar, wrote his diary in Bucaramanga. His books are a source of information on the personality of the liberator Bolívar and on the political life of the time. The house of García Rovira and the house where Bolívar stayed are monuments that also bear witness to this important period in the country's history. Bucaramanga is the administrative and cultural axis of a vast region composed of cities of great historical importance in the life of the country, such as Girón, San Gil, El Socorro, or Vélez.
