The atmosphere here contrasts with that of the north and the town can be a pleasant stopover for a night. Puerto Ricans have long since renamed Arroyo pueblo grato (pleasant village). Once an important port town in the south, Arroyo is now a small part of the region's economy. The town's development was ensured for a long time by the installation of the telegraph by its creator, Samuel Morse, in 1859. The line was installed on the land of the hacienda Enriqueta Morse, an old sugarcane plantation. It was the first time that a Latin American territory was equipped with such a communication tool.
