Known for its vodka, Łańcut is worth a day's stop to visit its castle, which was owned by the illustrious Lubomirski, Czartoriski and Pomorski families. The history of the city is again linked to that of the builder king Casimir the Great who brought German settlers here with a charter saying "Magdeburg law" (Polish version of city rights) probably around 1349. The name Łańcut is said to come from the German Landshut for watchtower. The city has always been the domain under the protection of a large aristocratic family, which explains the great architectural wealth and numerous palaces
