It was here that the Battle of Romsdalsfjord took place, during which the Viking king, Håkon Herdebrei, Håkon with a broad back (1161-1162), was killed by Erling Skakke, a henchman of Inge Krokrygg.Today, this small industrial town at the far end of Romsdalfjord is best known for its imposing setting at the foot of the Trolltindene mountains and its rock-climbing center. Åndalsnes is also the terminus of the Raumabanen railroad and a stopover on the Norwegian fjord cruise ship route. So there's no need to linger in town - you're better off exploring the mountains!
