Dovre National Park is renowned for its rich fauna (muskoxen, caribou and wolverines) and flora. In addition to their beauty, the Dovrefjell mountains are famous for their rare European inhabitant: the musk ox. Dovre also features in ancient and mystical tales and literature. The animal was reintroduced to these mountains in 1930, from a Greenlandic strain, the original having disappeared. Beware: this animal can be dangerous if you approach it too closely, so keep a distance of at least 200 metres to avoid frightening it, as it can charge at over 60 km/h.
