Hellesylt has been a tourist destination for many centuries. It was a popular destination for the European aristocracy. Ibsen himself stayed here in 1862. He met many of the people he wrote about. Hellesylt is under threat from Mount Åkerneset, whose scree flows into the Geirangerfjord. A major landslide could trigger a destructive tsunami. Surrounded by steep mountains, Hellesylt lies at the head of Sunnylvsfjord, which, like Geirangerfjord, is a branch of Storfjord. A stunning waterfall runs through the village.
