In the Middle Ages, Hamar (population 18,000) was the seat of an archbishopric. Completely destroyed by the Swedes in 1567, the town never regained its former glory. Today, only a few ruined arches remain from the majestic cathedral that once stood on the tip of Domkirkeodden. Today, Hamar's main attraction is its proximity to Lake Mjøsa.In the town center, close to the new cathedral, is the museum of the singer Kirsten Flagstad (1895-1962), one of the first great opera stars. Domkirkeodden, with its lakeside lawns, remains Hamar's favorite place for a stroll. Take the opportunity to visit the Vikingskipet, the skating hall built for the Lillehammer games in the shape of an upside-down Viking ship, voted Norway's best architectural achievement of the 20th century. This sensational building is as beautiful by day as it is by night!A not-to-be-missed mini-cruise on the venerable paddle-steamer Skibladner, "the White Swan of the Lake". It has been sailing the Mjøsa since 1856, from mid-June to mid-August, between Hamar-Gjøvik-Lillehammer and Hamar-Gjøvik-Eidsvoll. There's a restaurant, café and kiosk on board. The traditional menu features salmon and fragrant, locally grown strawberries.Transportation: by train from Hamar, 1 hour 15 minutes to Olso and 50 minutes to Lillehammer (www.vy.no/en).
