The name comes from the Old Norse Bergheimr , meaning "the farm between the mountains", probably the name originally given to a single farm located at the foot of the Kolsås mountain, which borders the municipality. The neighboring municipalities are Asker, Lier, Hole, Ringerike and Nesodden. The town center is called Sandvika. Bærum is famous in Norway for having, on average, the highest level of education and income in the country. It is Oslo's most sought-after and expensive suburb. With the redrawing of Norway's administrative boundaries, it is now part of Viken County. Claude Monet painted Sandvika with the Kolsås mountain in the background.
