Gjøvik, a town of 28,000 inhabitants, lies opposite Hamar on the other side of Lake Mjøsa. Its origins lie in a large glass-blowing factory founded in 1773 by Caspar Kauffeldt. Of the buildings that made up the glass factory, only the family residence (the Gjøvik Gård) remains, located in the park. In the workshops of the glass factory, which was in operation until 1843, engraved crystal Empire style glasses, pharmacy bottles, wine decanters and cobalt blue tinted bottles were produced. A beautiful collection of these old glasses, Glassamlingen, is on display in the town hall.
