The capital of the Northern Province, almost twinned with Pouembout, is the administrative and economic capital of the northern half of the Caillou. This commune of 7,340 inhabitants, whose village is relatively small, was founded in 1870 by Admiral Olry, and owes its name to Peak Kone (Koohnê, in Kanak), a former Kanak burial site located in the heart of the Baco tribe. The region has undergone rapid development thanks to the construction of the Koniambo nickel plant, and is now the heart of the VKP (Voh-Koné-Pouembout) zone. This booming business line aims to offset Nouméa's weight and maintain significant activity in this part of the country. The hotels have logically flourished and serve both business and tourist customers. The Nickel crisis since 2017 has affected its dynamism.
