Koumac(Nixumwak, in Kanak language) means "hard heads" in Pwaxumak language. It is the last real town in the North, the last stop before the vast expanses of Poum and the crossroads to the very wild East Coast. Both agricultural and mining, it has a real bush village look, with its large streets at right angles. Here, nickel has shaped the landscape and the economy, but there is also an important administrative center, with the North Hospital, and a major tourist pole, marked by a vast offer of accommodation and several visits and activities, on land, in the air, at sea and through time. The ancient village of Tiébaghi and the caves remain a must-see. For the beaches, Tangadiou and Paagoumène are very pleasant. The population of the commune is 4,252 inhabitants.
