Despite its 1,500 inhabitants, the commune of Poum (Pum in kanak) looks like the end of the world, perched at the very top of the Grande Terre, where nature is king. The winding and hilly road that leads to the northern tip of the archipelago stretches its long asphalt ribbon into enigmatic and dazzling lands, where the red earth rivals the green of trees, the purple of mountains and the blue of the sea. The heady scent of niaouli and eucalyptus delights the senses, while the eye is on elegant peaks covered with forests and charming berries lined with coconut trees. Time seems to have stopped here, amid landscapes halfway between Australia, New Zealand and even, sometimes, Canada. Nouméa is far away... The village is particularly pleasant with its gendarmerie, town hall and school facing the lagoon and its coastal road where fishermen hoist their boats on the banks.
