Népoui, a village belonging to the commune of Poya, is located on the plateau of the Muéo peninsula. Lucien Bernheim created the first mine here in 1890, followed by Société Le Nickel (SLN), which in the 1960s built the village to house its employees. SLN operates the highest mine in the territory at an altitude of 1,000 m (Népoui-Kopéto). The open-pit mining of nickel, which extends into the heart of the mountain, gives a red tint to the massifs, in striking contrast to the green of the forests. The Kopeto mountain, between Népoui and Pouembout (West coast), is a perfect example.
