Like its distant cousin Ibo, Vamizi was an important trading post for both the Arabs and the Portuguese, and many ruins bear witness to their passage. This sizeable island was bought and associated with the islands of Macaloe and Rongui, as well as 33,000 ha of coastline on the mainland, to become part of an ecotourism project in 1998: The Maluane Project, which combines very high-end "bush and beach" tourism with a draconian policy of conservation of the biodiversity of the marine and terrestrial areas. A part of the financial benefits has been redistributed to build a school and a clinic.
