In 1946, the British wanted to make Mtwara a second Mombasa, by building an ultra-modern port and by considerably developing the production of peanuts and cashew nuts, from which groundnut oil is made. But demand never followed... Today, Mtwara is mainly looking at the Indian Ocean and offshore gas fields. Recent discoveries off the coast of Mnazi Bay are finally attracting foreign investors to the region. A new energy windfall which also benefits the inhabitants of Dar es Salaam thanks to a 532 km pipeline inaugurated in 2015 between Mtwara and the capital. As for the port of Mtwara, it is getting a new lease of life and is regaining interesting volumes. The construction of a bridge, on the border with Mozambique, and the completion of the road have finally opened up the south-east of the country. Very positive for Tanzanian trade. Visit. The Mtwara region is classified as a red zone by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, so we strongly advise against going there. In quieter times, you can take a boat (300 TSH) from Msemo Beach to cross the bay and go to Msangamkuu, a fishing village. You can also stay around the pier and enjoy the beautiful beaches
