North of the Quirimbas National Park, Mocímboa da Praia was once an important trading port. Close to neighboring Tanzania, it served as an export market in colonial times. Mocimboa da Praia experienced atrocious attacks by the Islamist extremist group Ahlu Sunna Waljama'a in 2017 and 2018, which affiliated with Daesh in 2019. It was attacked and then occupied by the jihadists for a year before being liberated by the Rwandan army in August 2021. A rest that allows the displaced population to return to this now secure town. One day, it is hoped, peace and calm will return to the region.
