A former military base, Mueda is the historic capital of the Makonde, the last people to be colonized and the first to rise up to liberate their lands and improve their living conditions. The British and Portuguese agreed to describe the Makonde as a "fierce and resistant" people living on the high plateaus that were not easily accessible. However, the region did not remain inward-looking: Makonde chiefs traveled to Mocimboa da Praia for trade, so that Mueda was integrated into world trade long before the arrival of the colonists. Today, the area is controlled by jihadists and the local population has had to flee.
