The Kaldidalur was one of the main mountain trails used in the days of the sagas, and the settlers used it to get to the parliament in Þingvellir. Húsafell was also the diocese of the Reverend Snorri Björnsson. From Borgarnes, the road leads to many waterfalls and cascades, including Barnafoss, the "children's waterfall", and Hraunfossar, the "lava waterfall". Not far away is Deildartunguhver, the largest hot spring on the planet, which spews out 180 litres of water heated to 97°C per second. Borgarnes and Akranes are both heated by water from this spring, transported by pipeline
