Kerlingarfjöll, the "Witches' Mountain", is made up of ice-covered rhyolite peaks, culminating at the top of Snækollur, at 1,477 m. In these colourful mountains there are more than a thousand solfataras that smoke the slopes. According to legend, an old witch ("kerling" in Icelandic) was petrified here and gave the mountain its name. The rock dominates the Gýgjarfoss waterfall, on the edge of the F347 road. The Icelanders also considered until the middle of the 19th century that the surroundings were populated by dangerous brigands. Today, the site is popular with hikers, as there are several trails.
