One of Iceland's most amazing regions and most popular hiking destinations, with some of the highest geothermal activity in the country. It is an uninhabited valley, with hot springs, surrounded by the country's most extensive rhyolitic massifs, a kaleidoscope of colours. Some geologists believe that Landmannalaugar is a huge caldera, that is to say that there was once a large volcano above a pocket of magma, and that the top of the volcano collapsed. The thick and viscous rhyolitic magma forms small lava layers.
