Ásbyrgi is a canyon in the former Jökulsárgljúfur National Park, which since 2008 has been part of the country's largest national park, Vatnajökull. This area extends for 35 km, following the length of the Jökulsá canyon, up to Dettifoss. The landscape is very different depending on which side of the river you are on, but most of the sites are on the west side and can be reached from the 862. From Mývatn and Akureyri, there are bus tours to Dettifoss via Krafla. Please note that the dates depend on the opening of the slopes, so it is advisable to plan ahead.
