Between Myvatn and Akureyri, on theNo. 1 bus route, you soon come to a green, sheltered valley with a few large farms. The road climbs up to a plateau before descending to Goðafoss, a famous waterfall located in a depression and formed by three waterfalls arranged in an arc. In the year 1000, when Iceland converted to Christianity, Thorgeir Goði, an important clan leader from Ljósvatn who presided over the Parliament in Þingvellir, made the historically significant decision to throw the effigies of his former pagan gods into the waterfall on his return home. Since then, it has been known as the "Fall of the Gods".
