Akureyri, Iceland's largest city (18,000 inhabitants) excluding the Reykjavík conurbation, lies at the head of the Eyjafjörður, the "fjord of islands". Akureyri tries to give itself the air of a "big city", and the atmosphere on Saturday evenings is reminiscent, to a lesser extent, of Reykjavík. The atmosphere is different, but just as exotic and welcoming. In summer, the region enjoys a relatively dry, warm climate. In winter, the city welcomes many skiers, making it Iceland's busiest winter sports resort. Often referred to as "the capital of the North", it's a must-see.
