The waterfall in Dettifoss, located in a lunar landscape, is probably the largest in Iceland. Its average flow of 200   m 3 per second actually the most powerful in Europe. Dettifoss flows on 45   m of height and 100   m in width at the end of a canyon that it dug in basalt. The show is all the more breathtaking as you can get close to the fall. Attention: the rock is slippery! Shortly before the fall, Sanddalur crosses the black sand valley surrounded by cliffs of basalt organs. Small lakes testify to the ancient passage of the river: it is one of the old beds she has borrowed, and others are more downstream. About 1   km upstream from Dettifoss, we arrive in, where several waterfalls sink (10   m high in width) and form a beautiful fall in the arc.Hiking. A large and beautiful hiking trail runs along the west bank from Dettifoss to Ásbyrgi. These falls are a unique package in the world with spectacular views of the spectacular gorges. Then we arrived at the narrow canyon dug by the falls of Rettarfoss and numerous waterfalls, in front of a basalt fortress with reddish hues. It is impossible to approach the fall itself, and we will see it only from the top of the gorge. However, a marked trail leads to the exit of the canyon, where the Cascade waterfall begins. The hike continues on two paths that come together in Hólmarfossar, a beautiful waterfall that slides the green slope of the west bank.
