19,182 inhabitants. Rožňava, located 75 km west of Košice, is the best gateway to visit the Slovak Karst. It was already a gold, silver and copper mining town in the 13th century. Mining made it prosper, especially in the 15th century, which allowed it to become an important city of the Hungarian kingdom, a center of handicraft and school production. Today Rožňava is a pleasant town, especially around its main square, the widest in Slovakia, surrounded by beautiful Baroque houses. It has a museum tracing its history and that of its mines
