Between the Stelvio road, which continues into Lombard territory, and the Bernina pass towards the Swiss Engadine, Tirano is famous for its large sanctuary (1506) dedicated to Mary, which made it the symbol of resistance at a time when the valley, which was Catholic, was dominated by the Swiss followers of the Reformation. It was from Tirano that the revolt against the Protestant domination of Graubünden began in 1620. The museum adjacent to the sanctuary preserves a precious church treasure, offered by Cardinal Richelieu in exchange for the presence of a French battalion in the region. In the centre there are several beautiful palaces, including Palazzo Quadrio Curzio and Palazzo Salis.
