Tunbridge Wells owes its "Royal" status (1909) to Edward VII, but the Court had already been visiting it since the 17th century for the virtues of its springs. Their benefits were discovered in 1606 by Dudley Lord North, a young nobleman who felt so regenerated after drinking the water that he extolled its beneficial properties to all. Daniel Defoe, Queen Anne and Princess Victoria were the most famous of the many aristocrats who subsequently flocked here. A "dipper" still ladles out the water. There are a few similarities with the much smaller city of Bath, but with interesting architecture all the same.
