Navrongo means "fertile land" in the local vernacular. It is the closest town to Burkina Faso (16 km) and was only founded at the end of the 18th century. In the town center, the surprising half-built buildings are the last testimony of Acheampong, before he was dismissed in 1975. This architecture lends Navrongo a special atmosphere, as if the town were well-organized. This is not the case. What sets Navrongo apart from other towns in northern Ghana is its predominant religion. It is the bastion of Christianity in this part of the country. The main church, more commonly known as the Cathedral of the Lady of the Seven Sorrows, is located in the south-east of the town. It's well worth a visit, with its large main façade and interior paintings. This Christian tradition dates back to the early 20th century, when a British mission was sent to the small village of Navrongo. It's worth noting that 8 km from Navrongo, Lake Tonto stretches for 6 km and irrigates the entire valley, which explains why this area is so green when everything else is dry. The Chiara hills are visible from Tonto.
