In Fra-Fra, Bolgatanga means "city of stones". The town probably got its name from the many rocks that surround it. Bolgatanga is the capital of the region, with a population of around 65,000, 45 km from the Burkina Faso border and 165 km from Tamale. The town is also close to the border with Togo. The best time to visit Bolgatanga is undoubtedly market day, which is not always easy to plan as it takes place every third day. Bolgatanga is one of the most famous markets in northern Ghana for its leather products, a typical Fra-Fra craft.
