The commune of Castlebar is a particularly appropriate stop-off point for patriotic souls. Its history follows that of Ballina, where, in 1798, the young French Republic sent General Humbert and 1,000 of his men to fight the English, who retreated at lightning speed. At Castlebar, however, the French were defeated. This episode is known as the Castlebar Races. But the town itself, which is semi-industrial, is of little tourist interest, and not many visitors plan a trip to Castlebar.
