This quiet little island of 150 inhabitants lies around 9 km off the coast of Cleggan. The island's tranquil setting and superb scenery make it an ideal destination for hikers and cyclists. The first monastery was founded in 668 by St. Colman, Bishop of Lindisfarne. Today, you can see the ruins of a12th-century church. In the 16thcentury , the notorious pirate Grace O'Malley used Inishbofin as a hideout. In 1652, Cromwell's troops captured Inishbofin and built a prison for priests. Inishbofin Ferry operates year-round from Cleggan harbor.
