The administrative capital of the county, Dungarvan was founded in the 12thcentury by the Anglo-Normans. Today, this exceptionally well-situated tourist town is a popular stopping-off point for visitors wishing to explore the Comeragh Mountains, just a few miles to the north. The town's cultural heritage includes the famous Dungarvan Castle, St Mary's Church built in 1828, and above all the Abbey, founded in 1290, with its15th-century tower overlooking Dungarvan Bay. Locally, the town is popular for its shopping opportunities and is well connected to Waterford with hourly buses.
