Cobh (pronounced "Cove") is a picturesque town, emblematic of the region in many ways. Indeed, until the 1950s, it was considered Ireland's most important transatlantic port. It was from here that thousands of Irish left for the New World to escape the Great Famine in the second half of the 19th century. Cobh was also, in 1916, the last port of call for the famous Titanic, before the dreadful accident we all know about. Finally, after the Germans torpedoed the liner Lusitania off Kinsale during the First World War (an incident which led to the United States' entry into the war in 1917), it was to Cobh that the survivors were brought and the victims buried. These events are recounted in the Queenstown Story Museum. Finally, in Cobh, you can climb to the top of St Colman's Cathedral, which offers a lovely view of the harbour. While in Cobh, you should also take a few shots of the town's beautiful and colorful houses. A great stopover not to be missed if you're passing through the region!
