Wexford is a pleasant and lively town (many pubs), and a former major trading port (as the quays attest), but there is little evidence of its Viking past. The Vikings settled there around 850 (the name waesfjord means "sandy harbour"), then the Normans captured the town in the 12th century. Cromwell had three quarters of the population massacred in 1649, and the 1798 Rebellion against English rule saw the rebels in Wexford resist fiercely before a final defeat.Wexford is now famous for its prestigious Opera Festival, which takes place in late October and/or early November (www.wexfordopera.com).
