Wexford is a pleasant, lively town with many pubs, and was once a major trading port (as the quays attest), but little remains of its Viking past. The Vikings settled here around 850 (the name waesfjord means "sandy harbor"), then the Normans took the town in the 12th century. Cromwell had three-quarters of the population massacred in 1649, and the 1798 Rebellion against English rule saw Wexford's rebels resist fiercely before a final defeat. Today, Wexford is renowned for its prestigious Opera Festival, which takes place in late October and/or early November (www.wexfordopera.com).
