On the banks of the Barrow, New Ross is a small town founded in the 4th century, whose port didn't develop until the 12th century, thanks to the Normans, to become one of the most important in the country. Today, few traces of this Norman past remain, but New Ross has some interesting sights and a close association with John Fitzgerald Kennedy, the great-grandson of Irish immigrants and the first Irish Catholic elected President of the United States in 1961.
