A Unesco World Heritage Site since 1996, the church village of Gammelstad has one of the oldest churches in Sweden and has maintained a certain religious tradition for centuries. Going back 1,000 years, today's Gammelstad was a small island at the mouth of the river Lule. Its port was an important trading place. The sea was 10 m above its present level because 10,000 years ago the area was covered by several meters of ice. After the end of the ice age, the rising land gradually forced the population to move closer to the coast and the present Luleå was created around 1650.
