This town of 37,000 inhabitants boasts exceptionally large birch trees. Skellefteå is located in the Västerbotten region (which means "west of the Gulf of Bothnia"). The town stretches from west to east on both sides of the Skellefteälv river, the mouth of which is 8 km to the east. The E4 road, coming from the south, first crosses the right bank of the river with its modern neighborhoods of small houses and one-story buildings without particular charm. To the north, on the other bank, the city center forms a square of perpendicular streets, sometimes pedestrianized and with a strong shopping tone. Stortorget is the heart of the city, and it is there that the tourist office is located. The perimeter is animated during the day, but becomes deserted from 18h, time of closing of the stores. Some sculptures with sometimes surprising shapes give a certain style to this city center, especially around Nygatan. Nearby, the church of Saint Olov, which can be seen from afar by its size and its light yellow color, is worth a visit. However, you have to leave the center, which was rebuilt in concrete in the 1950s, to find traces of Skellefteå's history: to the west, along the river, is the large Noranå Park, the former city center, as well as the church village Bonnstan. The latter is unique and well worth a visit.
