Day 1: The secrets of Stockholm

Steps: Stockholm

Gamla Stan and Södermalm. Start your stay in Stockholm with its historical part, located on the islands of Stadsholmen and Riddarholmen. The Royal Castle is open to the public, but not everyone is interested in visiting the Tre Kronor Museum, which tells the story of the castle, and the Treasure Room. Gamla Stan has the Nobel and Post Office museums , but is especially worth a visit for its medieval cobbled streets and nostalgic atmosphere. On Riddarholmen is Stockholm's only medieval church, and you'll have a great view of the city hall from the pier behind the church.

Södermalm can be reached by subway (from Gamla Stan to Slussen or Medborgarplatsen) or on foot in ten or fifteen minutes. Home to the poor since the 15th century, this district has become the one that (almost) never sleeps, the haunt of the bobos and artists, the popular destination for night owls. Götgatan Street cuts this large island in two. To the east, the heights of Katarina offer beautiful views, especially from the terrace of Mosebacke Etablissement or the Katarina footbridge. To the west, the district of Maria, crossed by the popular Hornsgatan, has few cultural places but it has an atmosphere characteristic of this part of the city: relaxed and joyful. The island of Långholmen, to the northwest, and the parks of Tanto and Eriksdal to the south offer endless possibilities for relaxing and swimming. A visit to the city museum (free of charge), located in Slussen, is very instructive.

Day 2: Immersion in history

Steps: Stockholm

The Vasa and Skansen museums. For this second day, discover Stockholm's green pride: Djugården Island, a former royal hunting park that has become a protected area and seat of many museums. Of these, the Vasa visit seems to be an essential step because what it proposes is unique in the world: the wreck of a seventeenth century galion almost intact. The museum was built around the ship and done brilliantly. Djugården's other traditional attraction is its outdoor museum Skansen, where one can spend a whole day wandering between traditional Scandinavian houses and arresting its zoo. The site is immense and, in summer, comedians animate construction. From some points in Skansen, the city view is fabulous. In December, this is where the city's largest Christmas market attracts thousands of visitors.

Day 3: Birka: return to the Vikings

Steps: Gammelstad, Birka, Björkö

Old Viking village of Birka. In order to better understand the origins of the Swedish people and the activities of the peoples who lived in the Lake Mälaren region more than 1 000 years ago, a visit to Birka is needed. Located on the island of Björkö, this old Viking counter was occupied by viiith in the tenth century and was one of the major political centers in Northern Europe. Although there is nothing left of the village today, the excavations and passion of archeologists help to revive the daily life of the Viking people. A Viking village is even, year after year, rebuilt with the same tools as those used then. Drakkar tours and night nights in wooden houses are even offered! The Viking Museum allows you to learn a lot about this people in the fierce reputation. Birka can be reached by boat after an hour and a half crossing by the comments of a guide concerning the various islands of Lake Mälaren. This exciting visit can be done in just half a day.

Day 4: On the tracks of Strindberg

Steps: Stockholm, Helsingborg

The north of the city. This is where the real center is, more specifically on Sergelstorg, this great place where the Maison de la culture lies. It is possible to walk extensively in this area completely rebuilt in the 1960 s and only the church of Sainte-Klara retains memory. The long Drottninggatan pedestrian street is the city's most frequented artery, leaving Parliament to go back to the center's butte, hence the view of the area. The museum of the writer August Strindberg is located at Drottninggatan number 85. The atmosphere of Kungsgatan, the cinemas street, can be impregnated in the evening and to Stureplan, the place of chic bars, restaurants and clubs. A passage through Kunsträgården, the royal garden and then along the docks to the opera house is an essential way to discover the major sites of Norrmalm. In the end, the city hall guided tour (Stadshus) is recommended to discover this typically Swedish architectural and decorative style: the national romanticism of the early twentieth century. To conclude the day, you can take part in one of the boat walks that travel through the city with comments in French.

Day 5: The Islands of Lake Mälaren

Steps: Drottningholm

Drottningholm. A very pleasant excursion if the weather is in the right place: boat departure from the city hall for a small hour crossing on Lake Mälaren. The island of Lovön, which was built between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, is then reached by UNESCO, which is now classified as a world heritage site. Drottningholm Castle, the place of residence of the royal family, its fascinating interior and French gardens; baroque theater, beautifully preserved; the curious Chinese pavilion, the fruit of the amazing fashion of chinoisets. All drowned in the greenery of gardens and parks inviting the break, picnic and relaxation.

Day 6: Discovery of the entire Swedish archipelago over two days

Steps: Visby, Stockholm, Île De Grinda

Weekend in the archipelago. In order to conclude this stay, an excursion in the great archipelago makes it possible to apprehend another facet of Stockholm. Easy to access (ships leave every hour from Nybrokajen, in Östermalm), the islands often beautiful and very quiet that make it up deserve a visit and even spend one night. Here we offer a stop in Vaxholm, capital and gateway of the archipelago (1 hour 30 minutes from Stockholm). Its strong, summer animation, small streets lined with wooden houses, its seaside atmosphere... From here, after a afternoon to discover the small town and its fortifications, take another ship which will bring you, to the choice, on the island close to Grinda, small and suitable for fishing, walking or cycling in an idyllic setting, or a night on the distant but not less paradise Finnhamn. This mini-archipelago of three islands consists of dozens of coves, flat rocks canal by bathing waters. While enjoying its lovely restaurant, the terrace offers a great impression of the world. In both cases, accommodation solutions are offered, in hotel or youth hostel.
