It would be wrong not to stop in this city, which can be seen from the bridge over the Lille Bælt that connects Jutland to Fionie. This military city was built on an orthogonal plan by Frederik III (hence its name) and completed in 1650, during the wars against Sweden. Chased out of France following the revocation of the Edict of Nantes (1685), many French Protestants found refuge here. They brought with them the cultivation of potatoes and the preparation of tobacco. The market place (Axeltorv) is very spectacular with its alignments of facades (Axelhus) and brick pavilions with slate gables.
