Viborg has had its heyday in Danish history. King Christopher II signed the first charter imposed on a Danish ruler here (1320); Frederik I was proclaimed king here; in the XVIᵉ century, the Gospel according to Luther was first preached to the Jutlanders here, and the old currency was still minted here! The city held an important economic position in Europe: English, German and Dutch traders met at a large international market. It has preserved its medieval character with its pedestrian streets paved with cobblestones, with a bourgeois look, with small stores, restaurants and bars.
