Built in the 8th century by the Vikings, Aarhus served as a pied-à-terre for the king. Soon, the small city became an important place of trade. It was during the industrial revolution that the city grew considerably, thanks to the flourishing industry and the expansion of the port and the railway network. Today, with its 336,411 inhabitants (2017) and some 700,000 souls who make up its close suburbs, it is the second largest city in the country, THE large city of Jutland. A young and dynamic metropolis, a university city, the second largest in the country with about 38,000 students. Its historic heart has much to offer.
