This city of 45,000 inhabitants is as old as Constanţa. Founded by the Greeks in the 4th century BC as Callatis, it was later Romanized. You can visit its remains, as well as those of a 5th-6th-century Byzantine basilica, inside the New Belvedere hotel. Today, Mangalia is the country's second-largest port and a major industrial center, particularly for shipbuilding.
