With close to 30 000 inhabitants, the former mining town of Borşa is an important cultural, tourist and economic centre of the region. It is located in a valley caught between the Maramureş Mountains, in the north (Culminant peak at 1 957 m), and Rodna in the south (peak Pietrosul Rodnei at 2 303 m), and is therefore a good starting point to the National Park of the Rodna Mountains and the magnificent reserve of Pietrosul Mare.At the time of the Tatar invasion, the city was the scene of a famous battle. The inhabitants, led by the military art strategist Lupu Sandru, drew the enemy into a trap and, on 4 September 1717, won victory over a strong army of 14 000. The inhabitants of Borşa immortalized the event by a memorial called Preluca Tătarilor. To the east, 10 km is the tourist complex of Borşa, at 850 m above sea level, named also Baia Borşa. The natural setting is beautiful, but the architectural coherence of the station is to be reviewed… Mineral water sources are reputed and used for cures. There are many outdoor activities, including winter skiing and summer hiking.
