Near Polovragi, Baia de Fier ("Iron Bath") owes its name to iron ore mining dating back to the 17th century. To the north, in the Galben Gorge, lies a beautiful, easily accessible cave: the Grotte des Femmes (Peştera Muierilor, entrance €4), so named because it is said that women and children took refuge here during barbarian invasions. It's renowned for its impressive stalactite and stalagmite ensembles and distinctive colors. Numerous bear, wolf, hyena and lion bones have been found, as well as traces of human presence. Several daily buses from Târgu Jiu, Horezu and Râmnicu Vâlcea.
