This town of 73,000 souls is the gateway to the Jiu Valley, a long mining gorge where coal and brown coal are mined on a massive scale. The town is not particularly interesting for tourists, especially as it was not spared by the Communist regime. However, by donating some of his major works to the town, the illustrious sculptor Constantin Brâncuși made this capital of Gorj county famous.
