Drobeta-Turnu Severin, called Drobeta in Roman times, was an important military city, thanks to its strategic location on the Danube. Remains from this period can still be seen along the river. A little further upstream, you can also wander among the ruins of a fortress built in the 13th century by the Hungarians and often altered since. Apart from these two sites and a few museums, the town, whose center is made up of Communist buildings and low-rise houses, has little of tourist interest. But it can be a good starting point for exploring the region. Its lively market is a delight.
